Southern 50 Challenge Hike

A Winter Adventure in the Chiltern Hills

The annual Southern 50 is a challenge hike for all Explorer Scouts and adults in Scouting and the event has been going for the past 35 years.  It starts and finishes at a different venue each year.  This means that there will be a different route each year.  It always takes place somewhere in the Chiltern Hills.

The event is managed by a team of experienced adults in Scouting from Greater London North.

The date of the event is Saturday 14th February 2015.  Teams must comprise of between 3-5 members, and they come from all over the UK.

Teams have 24 hours to complete their chosen event of a 50 mile route, a 50 km route or a 30 km route exclusively for Explorer Scouts.  Teams are given a series of eight figure map references which correspond to staffed checkpoints just before they start, and they have to navigate their way to each checkpoint in order.

At the end, teams will be given a meal and bedded down for the Saturday night.  There will be entertainment for the Explorer Scouts during the Saturday evening.  At 0900 hrs on the Sunday morning there will be a presentation of certificates and trophies along with a video of the previous day’s play.
