26th Basingstoke Canal Challenge award

For many years Hampshire Scouts have organised a sponsored Canoe Challenge to raise funds for Odiham-based Accessible Boating, a charity that runs two boats equipped for disabled people to enjoy cruises on the beautiful Basingstoke Canal.

Each year the scout raising the most money enjoys a trip on one of the Accessible Boating Association boats and is awarded a small trophy to commemorate their generous achievement. The 2017 Challenge was won by 14-year-old Oceiah from Basingstoke, who was presented with her trophy by ABA President Mildred Stocks during a trip with her family and scout leaders on Dawn from Odiham to King John’s Castle on 10 April.

Oceiah, who was delighted to be able to help Accessible Boating, tells her story:

I raised money by paddling with Gav my Scout leader 6 miles in a Canadian canoe in 2016.  Then I kayaked for 3 miles in 2017 on my own for the Accessible Boating Annual Sponsored Canoe Challenge. My Scout leaders set me up for my Scout Personal Challenge badge to learn to canoe and kayak.  I found this extremely daunting and very hard but I was determined to meet my challenge, earn my badge and ultimately achieve my Gold Scout Award.

My favourite memory was in a Canadian Canoe on the River Wey with a lovely little black dog called Willow….oh and Stu our scout leader!

I am delighted I can now canoe and kayak and have even been on the River Thames; I was surprised how good I was. I now want to take my paddle power award so I can eventually do a canoe Expedition for my Gold Duke of Edinburgh Award as well as have another canoe trip with Willow.  I also want to beat my time in a Kayak for the 3 mile Sponsored Canoe Challenge for Accessible Boating in 2018!
