Crazy Camping in a Vicarage Garden
7th May 2017, 5:26pm

The Scouts of 5th Portsmouth Scout Group thought that, with no campsites on the crowded Portsea Island, it would be a crazy challenge to hold a group camp on the island.

They organised a camp around an open day showing the Scouts families and the local community what we do as Scouts. The Camp was held in the Vicarage garden of St James’ Church, thanks to Father Paul, so the Scouts achieved their aim of camping in the City. With Beavers, Cubs and Explorers joining the Scouts who camped we had 50 attended. Scout, Max Messenger provided the following report:

This camp was different because it was held in the St James’ Vicars garden. Father Paul kindly gave us his garden to sleep in for the night, while Beavers slept in the Church Hall. We roasted bananas wrapped in tin foil  over the barbecue fire and also roasted marshmellows. The Scouts made paracord bracelets based on the size of our wrists and we added a buckle and it in a complicated pattern. We had fun singing campfire songs and at the end of the day we went to bed at 9 o’clock and hot up around 8. The main good things about being in the Church was that there was no hay fever, we could walk there instead of drive, we could have an open day to show parents what we did and we were used to our surroundings.

Max M (aged 11)

Skip’s recollection on the time that the Scouts were quiet and went to sleep is slightly different!

All participants have earned the Crazy Camping badge… congratulations.
