Remembering those who have left us

Mike MullenderBasingstoke EastDecember 2015Mike had been at the heart of Scouting in Basingstoke and the surrounding area for many years. Mike had done 60 years loyal service to Scouting. He started as an Assistant Cub Leader in what is now Silchester District. During his Scouting career he held most positions – ADC Cubs, Manager and Caretaker of Crabtree Cabin and Campsite, Appointments Secretary, Training Adviser, Local Training Manager – and the list goes on – but he was wise enough not to be a DC. His impact on Scouting in Basingstoke will be sorely missed. Over the last ten or more years his interest was in appointments and training, interviewing and supporting Leaders in his unique and professional way.
Daniel WestNew Forest WestNovember 2015Daniel was a Beaver and Cub with 1st Fordingbridge, New Forest West, and is well remembered for his energy for life and enthusiasm for Scouting. His beaming smile warmed us all.

On 18th April 2015, Daniel was awarded the Scout Medal for Meritorious Conduct, for the brave and inspiring way that he had coped with his illness. This medal was presented by James Ketchell, Ash Wilson, and Adam Jollans. It was a memorable day that filled Daniel with pride.
Jill WaldenRomseyOctober 2015Jill has been Beaver Leader with 21st Romsey (Nursling and Rownhams) since 1992 and before that with 15th Romsey (North Baddesley).

A testament to the quality of the programme and the continuous hard work Jill has put into the running of the Beavers is seen in the numbers of young people who have enjoyed and benefitted from her leadership. Number have always remained healthy and peaked to such high numbers that a second colony starting at 21st Romsey earlier this year.

Jill did not just run an active programme each week, but also involved the Beavers with community events and fundraising for the group. Jill enthused the Beavers to join in with these events such as the community May Day and senior citizens Christmas party each year, in addition to tidying up the grounds around the local lakes and in the local church yard each year. In addition to this, each year near Christmas Jill arranged for the Beavers to sing Christmas Carols at a senior citizens nursing home in the local community…and were always asked to come back.
John GobleChandlers FordMay 2015President of 4th Chandlers Ford Scouts. John was 91 and had been in Scouting for a remarkable 82 years, starting as a Wolf Cub. He was Group Scout Leader of the 4th, as well as being very involved in Eastleigh Gang Show and Camp Warden of Cranbury Park.
Tom WebHampshireMarch 2015Tom Webb, one of Hampshire Scouts Vice Presidents. On hearing of the death of my friend Tom Webb it brought back memories of a remarkable man of considerable-enew: grand-devotion to the Scout Movement and particularly during the period between 1983 and 1988 when he was responsible for employing scores of unemployed people under the umbrella of Hampshire Scout Enterprises Ltd which was a government imitative {Manpower Services Commission.} Tom was appointed ACC (Community Programme and Hampshire Scout Enterprises)

This took up hours of Tom’s spare time but as an accountant and management consultant he took that in his stride. However, Tom was also a member of the County leader Training Team having been a Scouter in Southampton Basingstoke. Chandlers Ford, Dartford in Kent and in Oxfordshire before settling in Hampshire. By nature Tom was a modest and caring man and an excellent counsellor.

From 1992 to 1995 he was a Director of The Scout Association Trust Corporation and was auditor to the Brownsea Island Scout and Guide Committee. His international service started in 1978 as an Advisor to the World Scout Bureau in Geneva where he was also an Instructor with the Geneva Troop of Boy Scouts of America.
